WELCOME TO WEEK 1 IN OUR SERIES OF ADVENT

prayer of the week [Pastor dave]

In many times and places, through prophets and priests, kings and commoners, you have made promises to the happy and the hurting among your people. You have promised salvation, comfort, peace, friendship and restoration. So often in this world we live in and the lives we live in it, we feel distant from those promises. Instead of salvation, we feel doom. Instead of comfort, we are haunted by fears. Instead of peace, we fight. Instead of friendship we feel isolation. Instead of living restored to you, you feel distant.

The hope of your promises can feel distant, but let us not forget that the hope of your promises has come near in Jesus Christ. God, you came as a servant to your people to confirm your promises. You have been faithful to the point of setting aside your rights to dwell with us. You have been faithful to the point of patiently bearing with our insults and insolence when you lived among us. You have been faithful to the point of dying on the cross in my place. You have been faithful to triumph over death and live again on the other side.

You have proven your faithfulness, so help me trust you today. Help me trust your present power, so I might live differently. From your proven love, give me daily joy on good days and bad. From your proven powerful perseverance, give me peace in every circumstance. From your unbreakable faithfulness, give me unflagging hope.

God, we know this life won’t be perfect, but you have given us a better hope and promise. Teach us to live in ways that bring your kingdom hope into our broken world. Teach us to ground our ultimate hope in the coming kingdom that will never pass away.

Thank you for your faithfulness, the anchor of unshakable hope.

In your name we pray, Amen.
